Just for clarification, Raleigh does have a professional team and it is called the Carolina Hurricanes. It is that team that won the Stanley Cup three years ago. The queen city can’t say that it has done that. I do agree that we will more than likely have more athletic teams in the future. I don’t see a basketball team though. We have so much emphasis on our college basketball teams (UNC, Duke and sometimes State). I would like to remind all those that like to put down our area that if you don’t like it…leave. No one is telling you that you HAVE to live here. We are a growing city, and we are growing nicely. The addition to RBC Centura moving to DT Raleigh is exciting and the building is a nice addition to our skyline. It would be great to attract more businesses to DT.

People that spend their valuable time and energy to talk bad about Raleigh and this area feel threatened by this area for some reason. And I would like to add….Go Canes (next year)!!!
I have been to Charlotte a few times and to be honest, I didn’t like it nor was I impressed. With that said, I have never gone to any Charlotte web sites or chat rooms to talk crap/junk about their city. Why….I’m to busy enjoying my own city to care about what any other city is doing.

Mongo, ENOUGH WITH THE BASHING! We all have the right to our own thoughts about Raleigh, but you can keep your bashing to yourself. Also, compared to Raleigh, Durham sucks. Raleigh’s got more people, more and taller buildings, and most of the city has a low crime rate (stay away from central southeast Raleigh). And sure, there is less to do in DT Raleigh vs. DT Durham, but at least in Raleigh you’ve got a way less chance of getting shot and/or robbed. But please, quit bashing so much.

I am originally from Durham but now live in Raleigh. Both cities have a lot of really nice unique areas. Durham gets a bad rap because it has a bad area (which most cities do). Durham also has absolutely beautiful areas as well. Raleigh is a lot more metropolitan to me. That is something that I really enjoy but both cities are charming.

I sure hope Raleigh appreciates All the Hard work going into the new RBC Plaza. As an electrician on this jobsite I can tell you that we are working long hours under difficult condiions. We are very proud of having the chance to dazzle DT Raleigh. I grew up in Raleigh and boy has it changed. It’s always been a low crime family place to live. Enjoy!

I swear RBC looks shorter than Wachovia. Even with the glass tree on top.

    JR Says:

That glass tree symbolizes a lot more than just the the tallest building in Raleigh. It is something physical to represent the hard-working, creative, and proud people of this city. I think it’s a welcome addition for raleighites who have been patient since 1991 when the big buildings first came up.

It sure helps the middle part of our skyline too, no more big obvious void there anymore. By the way I just got back from Sydney this past weekend and I met a group of aussies that knew Raleigh was the capital of NC but had no idea where Charlotte is. Haha.

Mongo Slade, the elevation is what makes Wachovia Capital Center appear taller, or rather RBC Plaza and Two Hannover Square not appearing as tall. If you walk along Salisbury Str (South-bound), you can see it clearly. When built, The Hillsborough will be on one of the highest points in downtown, which will offer more visibility. Still, I do not see Wachovia appearing taller from any angle, at least in real life.

    LH Says:

Mongo Slade (writing of RBC’s Headquarters): “Ernest, RBC was a major catch for Raleigh you are simply in denial if you are trying to ignore the impact of getting a HQ downtown. Raleigh has simply lacked any major corporartion HQ in the area…”

Why has no one challenged Mongo regarding this? Raleigh’s downtown has a rather prominent headquarters located at No. 2 Progress Plaza. It’s called Progress Energy, and it’s on the Fortune 500 list. I suppose it’s our only Fortune 500 company, but that makes Mongo’s assertion no less wrong. He or she (not sure if Mongo is a typically feminine or masculine name), isn’t an artfull defender of his or her arguments (if one can even discern what they are). He or she is not really specific in addressing the points made by others, and rather beats around the bush when bashing them. This is a common, but shallow, way of appearing to be logical without having much to support one’s statements. My advice, which is always sage, is to ignore him.

    Mongo Slade Says:

Nothing to challenge LH. I am well aware of Progress and I have mentioned them in previous posts. What are you challenging here? You certainly disputed nothing in your post. I said you need more of it. You get the canadian bank’s regional or US HQ here and you get a tower. The first tower in Raleigh/Durham at or above 30 stories in nearly 20 years. What don’t you get about that concept or does the truth hurt? You offered nothing in your post except the usual nonsense. Many of you would admit this very fact about big business including HQ relocation serving as a catalyst for DT growth yet in total ignorance or silly pride want argue the obvious with me.

    Ernest Says:

LH, the ONLY reason I didn’t reply extensively to that statement was because Mongo was totally off topic… Nobody denies that DT Raleigh getting RBC Centura’s HQ wasn’t a major thing. What Mongo originally suggested was that we stole RBC Centura from Rocky Mount, and that statement shows how little he knows about this move. Challenging someone who has no clue on a specific topic is pointless. I hope that he understands – some day – that RBC is the one that decided, not Raleigh. Prior to moving their upper management to our city, they received no incentives. Moving to downtown was a different ballgame. There were other cities considered, Atlanta being one of them, but at the end DT Raleigh won. Highwoods Properties helped with this, too.

As for Progress Energy, I totally agree, and it is sad that many people tend to forget that without PE, a lot of the things we cheer about today would not have happened. PE will continue to contribute to DT Raleigh, even if they get bought by another company and relocate their HQ to another city. If the latter happens, it should be years down the road and by then it won’t hurt as much, but we should still be grateful to PE.

    Ernest Says:

Mongo Slade, you continue to demonstrate how little you know about Raleigh… You are embarrassing yourself… The role of PE is not the same with RBC Centura’s. The former was HEAVILY involved in DT Raleigh. RBC Centura will have to match at least part of what PE has done before we call their move to downtown “a catalyst”. RBC Centura is ready and willing to become a major player in the revitalization effort, but they are not in downtown yet… PE has been here for a long time and have proven themselves. Both RBC Plaza and the two proposed Edison towers are the product of their vision, not the city’s. The city officials worked on offering some incentives for relocation of RBC Centura from North Raleigh to downtown, which is not a small thing, but we need to get more aggressive.

    Mongo Slade Says:

Ernest, you went off on this nonsense about how many jobs remained in the Rocky Mount area as if that was some sort of prize for losing the HQ to Raleigh. I simply educated you on reality of the importance of HQs especially in area like Raleigh. They bring the high paying jobs as well as can serve as a magnet for attracting investment in the HQ’s city the size of Raleigh. It also can serve as a selling point to other companies wishing to do the same. Now RBC may not be the best example since it is still controlled by the powers that be in Canada but you cannot argue the impact.

Also Raleigh Durham’s focus of many well paying jobs is in Durham county at RTP. You want DT growth or center city focus you need jobs there to offer a reason to come to your DT for other reasons than to get drunk t a bar. Ernest I know you understand this so why bother disputing the obvious.

    Mongo Slade Says:

Ernest what are you talking about? Again no one is denying Progress is in dt Raleigh. I have stated in previous posts you need more of it DT instead of most folks driving to RTP or places like SAS in Cary. It is not a crime to be spread out but if the focus is DT growth job creation there can be a huge factor.

    Ernest Says:

Mongo, the only person who needs to be educated is you. You have been talking nonsense since you started posting here. You jump from one topic to the other, and since you have nothing substantial to say, you argue about the wrong topic. YOU said that Raleigh stole the headquarters from Rocky Mount, which is a factual error that as of now you still refuse to recognize. I don’t think there is a way to communicate with you, so go on… Let’s see what else new you will come up with.

Mongo, I agree with the other posters (especially Ernest XD) about your comments. Tell us, what do you have against Raleigh? Why do you hate it so much. Sure, our skyline may not be much, but we have what we have. Tallest building between Philadelphia and Atlanta outside of Charlotte. Hello? I don’t think Greensboro, W-S, Durham, or even Asheville (if you don’t count terrain height) have a building that tall. Bottom line, RALEIGH ROX AND YOU DON’T WANT TO ACCEPT IT. ^_^ Let’s see what you have to say now, basher?

  19. 739
    Mongo Slade Says:

Get over it Ernest. You are being petty in some attempt to argue something you cannot. Fact remains Rocky Mount losing the HQ to Raleigh was not a good thing for an area that already has high employment rates. You try to come off like you are in the know but you lose all credibility when you dispute the obvious by being petty.

Ari you look silly when you try to attempt to brag about Raleigh’s DT. I am still baffled how you and others can bash your sister city Durham just because you now have a 3 building skyline. LOL. I note the hypocrisy from the Charlotte/Raleigh debate.
