Block B now has a name. After much speculation, it looks like Raleigh will have two more new towers east of the current construction site of RBC Plaza. Targeted for completion in 2012, the tallest for downtown will be 38 stories and another at 24 stories. Developer Gregg Sandreuter has also wants to go green, a first for a downtown Raleigh skyscraper. Stay tuned for more on this.
UPDATE: The proposal has the taller tower at 470 feet (over 500 actually, as Ernest pointed out), the shorter 410 feet. This translates to 500,000 square feet of office space, 75,000 square feet of residential with 270 hotel rooms and 270 condominiums.
The preliminary site place can be viewed here.

Any word on who/what company the City may have in its sights for moving a HQ here? the timeframe from the announcement to completion is a short window if they still have to ‘hunt’ a large HQ tenant.
July 18th, 2007 at 3:56 pm
There are no definite tenants yet and it will be a while until see this project completed. The developer wants to begin no later than 2009 and finish by 2012. Remember, they need to finish the parking deck first.

I hope it’s a “true” entertainment complex. It will be a mistake if they do not take advantage of city market across the street (great opportunity to extend city markets look on the Blount Street side, possibly a mini city market between the new towers). This area needs multiple levels of entertainment with a plaza in the middle of all the development.
I hope it does not look like “The Dawson or the West (enough of the sand color exterior finish in downtown Raleigh)” which they are currently developing. This is prime real estate, great opportunity (in the city core) to build taller (38 should be over 40 and 24 should be over 30, need to take vertical to the next level).

Have they released a rendering of the building for people to look at? It would be great if it wasn’t that sand but something that stands out…something interesting.
July 20th, 2007 at 11:58 pm
Renderings are not released yet, but the official height for the taller tower should be well above 500ft. The 470ft are for the 34-story proposal, which was pushed to 38 right before the plans were submitted. I expect the final height to be closer to 530ft. One way or another, Raleigh will add two more high-rises to its skyline

Thanks for the correction, Ernest.

You are welcome, Matt
It is easy to be misled by the site plan and I wouldn’t have known, but the recent N&O article made it clear that the taller tower will actually be bigger than what the site plan shows.

530 feet, wow! That would be nice for downtown Raleigh. Looks like RBC Plaza won’t get to hold on to its title of “Raleigh’s tallest” for long if this project makes it through to completion!

They should combine the 2 to make a skyscraper over 900ft!!!
July 22nd, 2007 at 3:59 pm
Don’t say that, keddrick… There is one particular city councilman that will have heart-attack if he hears that
July 24th, 2007 at 2:53 pm
I agree with Keddrick, two smaller buildings is a waste of land (900′ would be a signature building, which Raleigh needs)
July 24th, 2007 at 7:57 pm
I agree with keddrick and TC, Raleigh truely needs a “Signature” building that can be seen from all points of Raleigh and beyond. 50, 60+ would be awesome.
July 24th, 2007 at 9:10 pm
I think the perfect situation would be if soleil came downtown and built a 55 plus story tower. Although it would be a 5-7 year wait, soleil rarely ever puts up a box and calls it quits.
July 24th, 2007 at 9:32 pm
But I am still pleased with two 400 plus towers.
July 24th, 2007 at 10:02 pm
I agree with all of you
I would love to see a very tall signature tower in the center of our skyline, and for that I have already picked a place: The N&O block
Doubtful we’ll see a signature tower going there anytime son, but I dare to dream!!!
July 25th, 2007 at 10:33 pm
This is truely amazing, seeing the city of Raleigh finally growing into the city it is. Raleigh is one of the best places to live in the world from my perspective and seeing a great skyline is just the perfect fit. Yes seeing these new buildings develop in the area with be very pleasing, but i do agree with keddrick, TC, and Chris B, a signature height tower would make Raleigh such a better city. Raleigh is the capitol of North Carolina, its one of the fastest growing cities in the south, a 900 ft tower would be perfect for our skyline…haha hopefully this wish could come true in the near future.
July 25th, 2007 at 10:36 pm
Hey who knows actually, if were ever gonna do 900 ft in the future, why not dare to dream of a 1,000 ft tower. It is the millenium and we do have the mind and will power to make such a commitment.

Does anyone have any updated information on the Campbell University Law School move to Downtown and if they are considering housing the school in any of these buildings or are they considering a separate building built for the Law School?
July 30th, 2007 at 9:54 am
I haven’t heard anything new on this speculation. It would be a wonderful idea, but time will tell if they can make it happen.
July 30th, 2007 at 5:31 pm
I heard that the faculty loved the idea of the Law School being in downtown Raleigh but the Administration are having serious reservation about taking it out of current campus area.
July 31st, 2007 at 10:07 pm
It’s great to see people take such a positive interest in their city. I agree with everyone about the signature building. I feel that it will come sooner than we all expect it will.

I lived in Raleigh..born and raised, now in the ARMy out of state. went to IRAQ and back..but through it all, I love RALEIGH!!! People ask if I’m from Raleigh, and I say, “NO, I AM RALEIGH!” I am glad that this site is here, and glad that everyone feels the same way I do. Can’t wait to go back home in a few weeks

keddrick,
Keep up the enthusiasm and love for Raleigh. I am not a native, but I surely feel like I’ve been here all my life.
This is off-topic, but I want to thank you for your service to our country.
