Maryann....RAleigh doesnt have the snowplows to support the city. We can go a year or even TWO years with NO snow. The city would be wasting money (In their opinions) So the city will close down. On another note, Raleigh recieves more ICE and Sleet than snow..that explains the confusion of Southern drivers not being able to drive in the snow.....On top of MOST cars up north already have "snow" tires, where as the south, we dont really need them! I have lived upstate New York as well (Syracuse) I figured that was the "secret" to driving in the snow.

Probably like last month... LOL the last population estimate was 392,552 on July 1, 2008 I believe so it's likely we crossed the 400k mark.

Great photos! Everything looks so pretty when it's snow covered. At least Raleigh rebounds quickly from snow, whereas in Pittsburgh, PA, it was snow and cold day after day and week after week. The novelty has worn off. I'm surprised that people actually had sleds to use. My son moved to Raleigh for a job and told me that his offices was closed due to the snow. Now if they only did that in Pittsburgh!

Ari,
Timing of the critical pieces of the puzzle still needs to be hammered out. Different models have the precipation outrunning the cold air, but there is one (NAM, main American NWS model) that shows the potential for something. But I have a good feeling about a few flakes (at least) Monday night into Tuesday AM. Also a shot at a few flakes Tuesday night into Wednesday AM. As it looks right now sadly, after that, it looks like we're going to be at/above average for the first half of Feb. Not a favorable upper level pattern for snow development, either.

It appears that more snow will be possible this Monday night/Tuesday. A major Nor'easter will attack the entire East Coast of the United States, bringing severe thunderstorms to the coasts and Florida, but snow falling as far south as Birmingham, Alabama. We, however, are right in the middle of all of this. It is currently disputed wether we will get severe thunderstorms or a major snow event. Stay tuned to National Weather Service forecasts throughout the weekend. Whatever happens, it's gonna be big.

Thats why it is so important that they play the Dix card in the best way possible. Is there even a plan yet, or is it still just a bunch of politics?

JRD, the demolition of the Lawyers Bldg is actually a decision made by the county, not the city leaders. While I will not miss the Garland Jones Bldg, I think that the county could have done a better job saving it, along with the Lawyers Bldg. I am sure they have many ways to justify the loss of the existing buildings, but I am not 100% convinced they tried their best, and I am not satisfied with the proposed site plan. Then again, who ever accused the county leaders - much like the state government - of giving a rat's ass about good urban designs?

Also, I agree with your evaluation of the new parking deck. It is a rather attractive structure and I am looking forward to seeing the L Building - or something better - completed. I am sure it will be ready for the public prior to the demolition of Garland Jones Bldg.

Thats fine with me. Id rather see potential for something better in the future than something so bland now. I must say though, and forgive me if this sounds ridiculous, but I think its quite attractive for a parking deck. Hopefully they can wrap it on the other two sides with more attractive facades.
Does anyone know when the parking deck will be open to cars? The Garland Jones building is coming down soon, if they arent done, they need to hurry.
I dont understand why there is being nothing said about the demolition of the Garland Jones building and the other brick building. I wish they could find a way to save the brick building at least. I think they could move it to the NE corner of the next block south. They could totally do it. Ive seen Mega Movers. It would give the city more office space and save a period building of which the city has few left of. Certainly, its not the most attractive or most descript building we have left of the period, but it was built in the twenties for cryin out loud. I have a feeling that if that building were in a different location and more noticeable, which its not, more would be said about tearing it down

Long shot...maybe Raleigh will destroy that L building MESS and replace it with a real tower...one can dream.

Matt can you impose the Edison Towers into the shot of DT from Boylan Bridge and Dorothea Dix?

From the ground level, City Plaza, Charter Square and Edison will add a lot of street activity to DT. Jimmy John's has leased a space in City Plaza and is set to open a the end of Summer.

Long shot…maybe Raleigh will destroy that L building MESS and replace it with a real tower…one can dream.

Matt can you impose the Edison Towers into the shot of DT from Boylan Bridge and Dorothea Dix?

From the ground level, City Plaza, Charter Square and Edison will add a lot of street activity to DT. Jimmy John’s has leased a space in City Plaza and is set to open a the end of Summer.

Matt, I knew you would be out there taking amazing photos and I was greatly rewarded for my faith in you :) DT Raleigh does look nice with the snow and sort of gives me that NE feel, especially photo #10!!! As for Beau, she is just a baby  I loved that shot with the snowball - thanks, Beth, for taking that fantastic photo. The Dix Hill shots were all amazing!!!

JRd, I suspect that the L Building will be yet-another stalled project, as the developer is having trouble finding office tenants. The original plan included condos, but all the restrictions and regulations - for the residential component - forced the developer to go with commercial space, only. There was a rumor that Cambell University School of Law was considering that space, but as we all know it didn't happen. The county isn't as anxious to enforce their deadlines, so I expect the developer to continue along the same path. That is, stall until market conditions allow the ground-breaking. Given the complexities of wrapping a parking deck with another building, I do not anticipate any further interest from other developers. If the parking deck had not been built, it would have been different, but at this point in time we'll have to get used to looking at an incomplete project.

This doesnt relate to snow, but does anyone know whats up with the L building? The parking deck looks complete, and it actually looks good. But whats up with the outer skin of the building? I thought it was supposed to be surrounded by condos. Construction looks complete. Are they waiting to build the condos?

Beautiful pictures. I would definitely pay to get #10 (or "Dorothea Dix Raleigh Skyline in Winter") as a poster, amazing shot with the density and the snow.

Raleigh actually looks pretty with all the snow, and it's definitely something I hadn't seen before. Here in MA everything looks pretty for a bit, but by now I'm so sick of snow I want to move tomorrow...

Neat. I have another dog, a Jack (Parson) Russell Terrier mix. I am unsure what breeds he is mixed with, although I can confirm that one is Cocker Spaniel, and a possibility that he is also Dachshund, as he is extra long, too. He is white with brown spots, and dark circles around his eyes and down the sides of his face. He's about 25 lbs., and 1 year and 4 months old. He's very mischievous, and has done about $500-600 in damage so far. At least we got him for free.....

Beau is a lab mix. We are not really sure what she is mixed with (maybe Whippet), she weighs about 46 lbs.

AWESOME PICS!!! Out here in Clayton, we got 7". I assume that Beau is a Labrador Retriever? I have one too, her name is Lil'Bit she's like 60 or 70 pounds and is six and a half years old. BTW, were you took that first photo appears to be the sight of a News 14 Carolina camera. Did you notice anything that looks like a camera?
