@ConnorGail21 I can't speak for anyone else and I'm not sure how familiar with Raleigh you are, but I know my positions are based on the fact that Raleigh is GOING to be be a big city regardless of what we want. The city grew around a 46% clip in the last decade and growth doesn't appear to be slowing that much in the future, it's projected to have over 600,000 residents by 2030 and it seems unlikely that the growth will stop there. We're worried about a lot of issues that we see in other, bigger Sunbelt cities and we'd much rather grow like New York or Chicago than Atlanta. I completely agree with your assessment that we don't want crime and a lot of the other problems that many cities face, but we also can't act like Raleigh is going to be a "small town" forever and we should try to plan that growht in an urban manner, advocating mass transit, high population densities and walkable areas. That's much more desirable (at least for me) than building mile after mile of suburban housing, I've been to Atlanta and Phoenix and Dallas and those places aren't the type of places I'd like to live.

I just found this site while looking for a tripod that would do just what this one does. Get up there. After reading some of the posts, I'm somewhat disappointed that there are so many people worrying about the size of Raleigh. Do you really WANT a big city? If so, GO THERE. Be a part of the un-managed rubble. Raleigh is a beautiful city and you can find just about anything there you can find in a "big city" (except for the high crime rate, smut, heavy drug trafficing - gangs, and slums the size of Harlem). I doubt if anyone writing these negative comments is actually successful in the "big city" - if so, why do you spend your time bashing Raleigh? I'm from Las Vegas - not a big city either, but I would rather live in Raleigh. I just may some day.

BTW, I bought the Manfretto from your pics. I'm loving it. Thanks.

Thomas- It's sturdy enough for heavy camera bodies and lenses (heaviest I used was the 1ds Mark III with the 100-400L). It does sway when extended, however, which can hamper longer exposures. It also comes with guy wires for more stability.

What is a realistic load capacity of the 24' Monfrotto camera platform you are using?
Do you ever feel like the think may blow over with a camera mounted high?

after riding around downtown and seeing the limited space we have left to develop i think raleigh's gonna end up looking like another DC with not so many tall buildings but maybe just large buildings... unless developers start thinking taller. i just dont see raleigh having that height we need in our skyline, hopefully i will be wrong on this one people.

Would love to know more about the "nuts and bolts" of these photos. For instance, are you shooting blind and using a remote shutter? How are you framing these photos?

i emailed someone in charge of the city development asking what plans were approved. we'll see if i ever hear back. i am excited about green square and secu, even if it's 2+ years away. there's also city plaza and hillsborough st, as far as new stuff goes, albeit not buildings. im most disappointed at the stalling of the already slow charter square stuff, but at least there's some bright spots still in this crappy economy.

Thomas: You must be out of your mind to be complaining about no new construction at a time when no one can get a loan. And your comments about downtown are rather idiotic, to say the least.

AMAZING!!!! You find the best angles and make Raleigh look larger and more dense than it really is. I love the Renaissance Hotel pic and all the others. I can't choose a favorite!!

Great photos!

Also, Chuck is right.

When will we start seeing a number of towers under construction? I visit other cities across the country, alot of towers going up, Raleigh is making too many excuses (developers and architects around here are small rural town thinkers), we will all be in our 80's before we can enjoy a "Real" downtown (ugly empty lots, sad new architecture, city market is laughable and warehouse district is pathetic)

Cree Shimmer Wall: Wow, they must think people are stupid, they have to tell us what it is. I can see just the Cree name, but adding shimmer wall, another sign of downtown thinking with "have a_s vision" (don't even mention that they gave money, does not matter, looks rediculous).

Can't wait for the second phase of the convention center to cover up the wall (have they thought about that problem?(NO, city council, DRA and the architects of that box have no vision)

This has to be my favorite collection in quite a while - I LOVE the first Capitol photo as well as the RBC Plaza picture with all the power lines leading up to it. GREAT work!!!

Matt,

This is probably my favorite of your collections. The new angles from the tripod actually make Raleigh look interesting. Thanks for sharing your incredible photography.

Matt,

I've been a long-time follower of your site and I think these photos are perhaps some of your best yet - the new monster tripod is intense! I'm moving to San Diego in 6 days and, though I'll be missing Raleigh a lot, I will look forward to checking back with RaleighSkyline for beautiful views to remind me of home. Thanks for your awesome work!

Matt,

Let me say that your photography has been elevated to new heights, literally  I was happy for you when you told me the other night about this 24ft tripod, but seeing the results was far more impressive. I am truly happy for youand I look forward to your series, more than ever before. Thanks for sharing your work and for continuing to invest on your photography. Much appreciated.

Saying that these photos are spectacularly awesome does not accurately describe these photos.

I would give these photos 100,000 out of 5 acorns. :)

That tripod is nuts, Matt. It sure provides some great views, however. Excellent stuff as always!
