Final null Increase for RBC Plaza Crane

March 11th, 2008

The crane at RBC Plaza was boosted recently to make room for the addition of the building’s crown. I’d estimate the crane to be at least over 600 feet- makes you wonder when we’ll see something this tall again downtown.

That spire make RBC look much higher if the crane has moved up this much.

I was in Las Vegas recently and right now the RBC plaza’s crane is about as high as any other crane on the strip.

The operator of that Crane is pretty lucky…he holds the record for sitting on the highest structure ever in Raleigh, NC

Walking down Fayetteville St, the RBC Plaza really gives it a whole different feel too. It is like someone is watching you from that space in the sky now. Maybe it’s just me but I think that new building is really making its presence felt not only from a distance but at the ground level as well. I hope some more shops and late-night places to eat open up along its border with Wilmington St.

I agree with you, JR. RBC Plaza has changed the landscape, for the better. Thanks for the photos, Matt.

JR, re the RBC Plaza crane vs those in Las Vegas, consider:
-the main resort tower at Center City is at 41 stories going to 60
-Vdara, in City Center, is at 48 floors going to 64
-the Mandarin Oriental in City Center is at 30 floors going to 56
-Fontainbleau is at 31 floors going to 63
-Encore is topped out at 54 floors with work continuing on the crown
-Panorama Tower 3 is at 40 floors going to 44.
-Planet Hollywood Tower 1 is at 36 floors going to 50
All of these have cranes to the ultimate top. There are another half dozen or so 40 story+ buildings under way whose cranes have not yet reached max height

Sounds like Las Vegas is the U.S. version of Dubai

Who knows, maybe LV will make its own waterfront neighborhoods too 😀 It’s cool to watch that place grow I’ve been there often over the last 10 years… too bad they can’t control the crime as well as they do the growth.

city center in vegas is an amazing project. i think it’s 7-8 highrises in all. its a 68 acre 8 billion dollar + project. its so big it’s getting its own clark county fire station. i wsh raleigh could pull off something 1/4th as big as that.
